IHow it plays

Capture. Combine. Discover. Collect.

A session can be thirty seconds, one photo and three transmutations, or a whole evening spent chasing a chain.

  1. 01

    Capture

Point your camera at anything and tap. In a couple of seconds it gives up its essence and becomes a card: a name, an element, a metal and a line from Aurelia.

A rubber duck → Rubber Duck · Water · Lead

  2. 02

    Combine

Drag one card onto another and the mixture boils. The AI decides what they make, and the same two things always make the same thing, for everyone.

Rubber Duck + Kettle → Whistling Duck

  3. 03

    Discover

If no one in the world has made it before, it is a world-first: a new entry in the Codex, numbered, with your name on it.

    Catkin + Cuddlefish → No. 82 · World-first

  4. 04

    Collect

Your Grimoire fills page by page and chapter by chapter, from Lead to Quintessence. Its blank pages hold Aurelia’s clues.

IIWorld-firsts

Make it first, and it carries your name forever.

Every pair is decided once, for the whole world, and written into the Codex: the public, numbered book of everything ever made. From then on the same two things make the same result, for everyone, instantly. Whoever makes something first is credited on its entry, with their alchemist name, for everyone to see.

IIIThe story

Aurelia and the Great Work

You are an apprentice alchemist. Your teacher, Aurelia, the last alchemist, has vanished and left you her Grimoire. Its pages are blank, because the world’s matter has forgotten what it can become.

Your camera is the alembic. Everything you photograph gives up its essence, and every transmutation writes part of a page back. Aurelia speaks from the margins: notes, warnings, recipes in her hand, and the trail of where she went.

Aurelia’s drawing of her burned workshop, taped into her notebook

If this book has found you, the workshop is ash. Fill its pages. — A.

The story follows the four stages of the alchemists’ Great Work. Each chapter has its own palette, ingredients and recipe quests, a page of Aurelia’s story read aloud, and one great transmutation at the end.

  1. Chapter I

    Nigredo, the blackening

    ink, ash, lead

Breaking things down: smoke, rust, ruin. Aurelia’s workshop burned. Why?

  2. Chapter II

    Albedo, the whitening

    silver, salt, moon

Purifying: water, glass, light. Her letters from the coast.

  3. Chapter III

    Citrinitas, the yellowing

    gold, sulfur, sun

Awakening: things begin to live. Who she was running from.

  4. Chapter IV

    Rubedo, the reddening

    oxblood, fire

Completion: the Philosopher’s Stone, and where Aurelia went.

Recipe quests

Make Rain using only things from your bathroom.

IVThe cards

Five metals, four elements, and a fifth.

Every card is engraved and painted in one house style, set in a frame of its metal and numbered in the Codex.

    Lead

    Most captures

  2. Whistling Duck: Air, Copper, Codex No. 53

    Copper

    Living captures and shallow results

  3. Catkin: Air, Silver, Codex No. 77

    Silver

    Deeper results

  4. Mooncalf: Aether, Gold, Codex No. 82

    Gold

    Deep, novel results

  5. Great Bear: Aether, Quintessence, Codex No. 113

    Quintessence

    Legendary

Photographed things start as Lead, or Copper when they are alive or natural. Results climb with depth.

Every card holds one element.

Fire, Water, Air and Earth, drawn as the alchemists’ triangles. Aether, the fifth, comes only from combinations.

Rises and burns.

Questions

What happens to my photos?

Your photos stay yours. Each one is kept on the back of your own card, as its specimen, where only you can see it; everyone else sees only the engraving, which is painted from words, never from your photo. To read what a photo shows, the game sends it to OpenAI, which doesn’t use it to train its models, and the game asks you first. Location and other metadata are removed from every photo. Delete your account and your photos go with it. Privacy policy

Can I photograph people?

Not as the main subject. A photo whose main subject is a person or a face, a document or a screen is refused, kindly, and we keep nothing of it; OpenAI, which reads photos for us, may keep them for up to 30 days to detect abuse. Someone only in the background doesn’t refuse a photo: the card is about the main thing. Brands become plain names: a can of a famous cola is a Soda Can.

Who can play?

Anyone 13 or older, or older where the law requires it. Terms of service

Which phones?

iPhone and Android, coming soon. Join the waitlist and you’ll hear first.

Is it free?

ALCHEMIKA is free to play: capturing cards and making known recipes cost nothing, and new discoveries are limited each day. No card, metal or chance of one will ever be for sale, and there are no loot boxes.

What does “decided once, for the whole world” mean?

The first time anyone combines two things, the AI decides what they make, and the answer is written into the Codex. After that, those two things make the same result for everyone, instantly, and the entry credits the first person who made it.
